The experience
For many guests, this is the most memorable three hours of their cruise. Mayan Eden is a protected nature reserve set into the hills above French Harbour, home to a small population of rescued and rehabilitated wildlife — many of which had been kept illegally as pets before finding refuge here.
Your guide leads you through the reserve at an unhurried pace. The sloths are first: gentle, slow, and curious. Most guests are invited to hold one, supported by your guide, while it nestles against your shoulder. The capuchin monkeys are next — bright, social, and entirely willing to perch on a hat or arm in exchange for a piece of fruit.
Inside the open-air aviary, scarlet macaws will land on outstretched arms to take seeds from your hand. A short trail brings you to the kinkajou habitat, then the iguana enclosure where children can feed the resident iguanas a length of leafy greens.
Throughout, your guide narrates the conservation story — how each animal arrived, the laws now protecting them, and why Roatan's sanctuary work matters for the wider Bay Islands ecosystem.
